James was born in 1871 in East Peckham, Kent.  James' father was Walter FRANCIS and his mother was Clara SAUNDERS.  His maternal grandparents were James SAUNDERS and Elizabeth JEFFERY. He had two brothers and six sisters, named Henry William, Charles Walter, Mary Elizabeth, Louisa, Harriet, Alice, Ada Jane and Clara Minnie.  He was the fourth youngest of the nine children.
