Walter was born in 1888 in Hackney.  Walter's father was Frederick DODD and his mother was Sarah Elizabeth PEAD.  His maternal grandparents were James Durdant PEAD and Elizabeth LOCKYER. He had six brothers and five sisters, named Frederick Charles, Henry James, Alfred William, George Robert, William Frederick, Frederick Walter, Elizabeth Jane, Emma, Alice Louisa, Sarah Amelia and Jessie.  He was the youngest of the twelve children.
