Thomas was born in 1618 in Cranbrook, Kent.  Thomas' father was John DENCE and his mother was Joane SMYTHE. He had five brothers and two sisters, named William, John, Richard, Elizabeth, James, Elizabeth and Ann.  He was the third oldest of the eight children.
