Richard was born in 1622 in Cranbrook, Kent.  Richard's father was John DENCE and his mother was Joane SMYTHE. He had five brothers and two sisters, named William, Thomas, John, Elizabeth, James, Elizabeth and Ann.  He was the fourth youngest of the eight children.
