Esther was born in 1831 in Boughton Monchelsea, Kent.  Esther's father was Thomas Tongue BOULDEN and her mother was Sarah BANKS.  Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Tonge BOULDEN and Elizabeth PEIRCE. She had four brothers and a sister, named Thomas Tong, Dennis, David, George Robert and Sarah.  She was the third oldest of the six children.
