Sarah was born in 1821.  Sarah's father was John Ranson and her mother was Sarah Ratcliff.  Her paternal grandparents were John Ranson and Martha Hayward. She had four brothers and two sisters, named John, George, Henry, Charles, Mary and Ellen.  She was the fourth oldest of the seven children.
