George was born on December 17th, 1818.  George's father was John Ranson and his mother was Sarah Ratcliff.  His paternal grandparents were John Ranson and Martha Hayward. He had three brothers and three sisters, named John, Henry, Charles, Sarah, Mary and Ellen.  He was the second oldest of the seven children.
