Ellen was born in 1828.  Ellen's father was John Ranson and her mother was Sarah Ratcliff.  Her paternal grandparents were John Ranson and Martha Hayward. She had four brothers and two sisters, named John, George, Henry, Charles, Sarah and Mary.  She was the second youngest of the seven children.
