Thomas was born in 1771 in Granville, Northumberland, Pennsylvania.1   Thomas' father was John Gemmill and his mother was Elizabeth Porter.  His paternal grandparents were John Gemmill and Ann Bernett. He had two brothers and three sisters, named John, Zachariah, Elizabeth, Mary and Ann.  He was the third youngest of the six children.  He died at the age of 31 in 1802 in Louisiana.1
