John was born on December 12th, 1759 in Carlisle, Cumberland, Pennsylvania.1   John's father was John Gemmill and his mother was Elizabeth Porter.  His paternal grandparents were John Gemmill and Ann Bernett. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Thomas, Zachariah, Elizabeth, Mary and Ann.  He was the oldest of the six children.  He died at the age of 55 on December 14th, 1814 in West Chester, Pennsylvania.1
