Hugh  was born on February 22nd, 1821.  Hugh 's father was Hugh Hamilton Campbell and his mother was Menzies Sinclair.  His paternal grandfather was John Hamilton and his paternal grandmother is Jane Campbell. He had three brothers and a sister, named John, Alexander, Archibald and Jean Campbell.  He was the fourth oldest of the five children.
