Archibald was born on July 28th, 1818.  Archibald's father was Hugh Hamilton Campbell and his mother was Menzies Sinclair.  His paternal grandfather was John Hamilton and his paternal grandmother is Jane Campbell. He had three brothers and a sister, named John, Alexander, Hugh  and Jean Campbell.  He was the third oldest of the five children.
