    - Barbara and Nelson were born 9 years apart, Nelson being the younger child. Thus, growing up, in Poughkeepsie, NY, Nelson did not have much of a relationship with his older sister. By the time Nelson himself was 9, Barbara was out of the house, attending college. In 1962 when Nelson was a young teenager, Barbara moved to Chicago, Illinois. Though the two are friendly with each other even today, physical and emotional distance keeps them from being integral parts of one another's lives. There is very little interaction between their two families, but there are no bad feelings between them. They simply grew apart.

    - Nelson reports growing up idolizing his father, loving him, and being as close as a father and son can be. During the difficult family years when Nelson was a teenager, the conflict between his parents greatly upset Nelson. He often retreated away from the turmoil and grew to view his father's longsuffering as weakness. Nelson claims though that much later, as an adult, he came to appreciate his father's quiet strength and realized his own misunderstanding of the situation. Unfortuantely, Nelson's father died before reconcilliation with his father could happen. This is what Nelson claims to be one of his own "greatest regrets in life." Nelson now fears that his relationship with his own adult sons, Mark and Daniel, is a bit distant, and he will not get the chance to really get to know them before he himself passes away. While there is no obvious conflict between Nelson, Mark and Daniel, both sons live in other states from where Nelson and the rest of his family live; far enough away that regular visits and close relationships are nearly impossible. Nelson has admitted that he would like to reach out more to his sons, but has yet to do so.

    - Mark was Nelson and Susan's first born child. Nelson and Susan both admit that because of their own upbringings and the fact that they did not know how to raise children, as their first-born, Mark received the brunt of their mistakes. Additionally, Nelson and Susan had become Born-Again Christians when Mark was roughly 2 years old, and was involved in a strict, fundamentalist Christian church. This church taught that children need to be strictly disciplined and Nelson and Susan's parenting style became authoritative. Mark was taught from an early age to suppress his energy and submit to authority. During Mark's teen years, Mark struggled a great deal with finding his own personal identity, and rebelled against his parents. The conflict between them grew as Mark got into petty trouble at school and even with the law. During young adulthood, Mark became estranged from the rest of his family for roughly 10 years. Mark has now become a Born-Again Christian himself, and is working on reestablishing his relationships with the rest of his family.

    - Daniel is Nelson and Susan's third child. Nelson claims that by the time Daniel was born, he and Susan had managed to work out many of the "kinks" of parenthood, and was likely much more lenient with Daniel and their youngest, Joanna. However, Daniel and Nelson are not particularly close. This may be due to the difference in personalities. Daniel is very social, outgoing, somewhat of a comedian, is boisterous and energetic. Whereas Nelson is very intellectual, introverted, and socially awkward. Though Nelson is very proud of Daniel's accomplishments and successes, it is likely that the two just do not understand each other very well and do not know how to bridge that gap. Daniel also lives with his own family several states away, and the physical distance adds to the emotional one. That being said, Daniel and his family do visit once or twice a year, and it is always a welcomed and exciting event when everyone gets together.
  He and Susan Seaman/Edwards have an affectionate relationship.
