James was born on January 21st, 1781.  James' father was George Jones and his mother was Mary Rhodes.  His paternal grandparents were Solomon Jones and Elizabeth Neville. He had seven brothers and a sister, named George, Tholemiah, William, Solomon, Samuel, John, Daniel and Letitia.  He was the second oldest of the nine children.
