Mary was born in year 1788 in Mawgan, Cornwall.  Mary's father was William Langdon and her mother was Jane Bullock.  Her maternal grandparents were  Steven Bullock and  Frances Vivian.  She was the sixth of twelve children.  She had four brothers and seven sisters, named Henry, Thomas, Stephen, Ralph, Ann, Jane, Elizabeth, Catherine, Sarah, Maria and Fanny.
