József's father was Antal Asbóth and his mother was Julianna Benkő.  His paternal grandparents were János Asbóth and Zsuzsanna Drobni. He had a brother and two sisters, named Antal, Rozália and Mária.  He was the second oldest of the four children. He had a half-brother and three half-sisters, named Imre, Terézia, Eleonóra and Erzsébet.
