István's father was István Asbóth and his mother was Judit Pápai. He had seven brothers and four sisters, named Mihály, Mihály, Mihály, Pál, István, Pál, József, Erzsébet, Katalin, Katalin and Éva.  He was the fifth oldest of the twelve children.
