Mary was born in 1785.  Mary's father was David Harless and her mother was Catherine Elizabeth.  Her paternal grandparents were Johann Philip Harless and Anna Margaretha Preisch. She had four brothers and five sisters, and also a sibling of unknown gender, named Phillip, John, David, Jacob, Hannah, Elizabeth, Catherine, Rebecca, Nancy and Harless.  She was the seventh oldest of the eleven children.
