Jacob was born in 1792.  Jacob's father was David Harless and his mother was Catherine Elizabeth.  His paternal grandparents were Johann Philip Harless and Anna Margaretha Preisch. He had three brothers and six sisters, and also a sibling of unknown gender, named Phillip, John, David, Hannah, Elizabeth, Catherine, Mary, Rebecca, Nancy and Harless.  He was the eighth oldest of the eleven children.
