Raymond was born on March 1st, 1953.  Raymond's father is David Anthony van der Merwe and his mother is Martha Levinia Johanna de Wet.  His paternal grandparents were David Frederik van der Merwe and Theresia Ann Katharina Mauer. He has two brothers and a sister, named Antony, David and Theresia.  He is the second oldest of the four children.
