David was born on May 5th, 1925.  David's father was David Frederik van der Merwe and his mother was Theresia Ann Katharina Mauer.  His paternal grandparents were David Frederick van der Merwe and Elizabeth Maria Catharina Cecilia van der Merwe. He has a sister named Stella.  He is the older of the two children.
