Jacobus was born on February 24th, 1939.  Jacobus' father was Jacobus Lodevikus van der Merwe and his mother was Gesina Adriana Slabbert.  His paternal grandparents were Jacobus Lodevikus van der Merwe and Jacomina Magritha Ehlers; his maternal grandparents were Frans Slabbert and (Bettie) Van Reenen van Outshoring. He has two brothers and a sister, named Frans, David and Elisabeth.  He is the oldest of the four children.
