David was born on October 27th, 1950.  David's father was Jacobus Lodevikus van der Merwe and his mother was Gesina Adriana Slabbert.  His paternal grandparents were Jacobus Lodevikus van der Merwe and Jacomina Magritha Ehlers; his maternal grandparents were Frans Slabbert and (Bettie) Van Reenen van Outshoring. He has two brothers and a sister, named Jacobus, Frans and Elisabeth.  He is the youngest of the four children.
