Hermanus was born in 1962.  Hermanus' father was Dawid Frederik van der Merwe and his mother was Anita Voster.  His paternal grandparents were Hermanus Lambertus van der Merwe and Susanna Aletta Francina Geyser. He has a brother and two sisters, named Benjamin, Julie and Melanie.  He is the second oldest of the four children.
