Benjamin was born in 1966.  Benjamin's father was Dawid Frederik van der Merwe and his mother was Anita Voster.  His paternal grandparents were Hermanus Lambertus van der Merwe and Susanna Aletta Francina Geyser. He has a brother and two sisters, named Hermanus, Julie and Melanie.  He is the youngest of the four children.
