Gustav was born on January 27th, 1847 in Pfortzheim, Alemania. Gustav's father was 151 Christian Karl Hepp Dietrich and his mother was Emma Karoline Dittler. He had seven brothers and two sisters, named Wilhelm, Adolf, Karl, Robert, Otto, Hermann, Reinhard Georg, Marie and Emilie. He was the second youngest of the ten children. He died at the age of 52 on May 27th, 1899 in Pfortzheim, Alemania.

Incorporó en dicho negocio a su hermano Hermann Peter que llegó a Valparaiso en el año 1870. Volvió a Alemania en 1888 y se instaló en la casa del jardin de sus padres.
