Roy was born on June 15th, 1901 in Alto, Georgia.  Roy's father was John Jefferson Martin and his mother was Vetta  Victoria Grant (Martin).  His paternal grandparents were Joseph Marion Martin CSA ((CONFEDERATE STATES OF AMERICA)) and Matilda C Warren (Martin); his maternal grandparents are Thomas Benton Grant and <Unknown>. He had three brothers and four sisters, named Carl, John, Thomas, Grace, Clara, Ora and Hazel.  He was the third oldest of the eight children.  He died at the age of 78 on March 26th, 1980.  His burial was in Hendersonville.
