Thomas William was born in 1868 in Redcar, Yorkshire.  Thomas William's father was George Augustus Overton and his mother was Ann Elizabeth Robinson.  His paternal grandparents were Richard Overton and Martha Greef; his maternal grandparents were William Robinson and Elizabeth. He had a brother and three sisters, named Arthur Edwin, Clara, Gertrude and Lily.  He was the oldest of the five children.
