Arthur Edwin was born in 1876 in Darlington, Durham.  Arthur Edwin's father was George Augustus Overton and his mother was Ann Elizabeth Robinson.  His paternal grandparents were Richard Overton and Martha Greef; his maternal grandparents were William Robinson and Elizabeth. He had a brother and three sisters, named Thomas William, Clara, Gertrude and Lily.  He was the third oldest of the five children.
