Lily was born in 1881 in Darlington, Durham.  Lily's father was George Augustus Overton and her mother was Ann Elizabeth Robinson.  Her paternal grandparents were Richard Overton and Martha Greef; her maternal grandparents were William Robinson and Elizabeth. She had two brothers and two sisters, named Thomas William, Arthur Edwin, Clara and Gertrude.  She was the youngest of the five children.
