Elizabeth Ann was born in 1871 in Crook, , Durham, England.  Elizabeth Ann's father was William Abbott and her mother was Mary Beckwith.  Her paternal grandparents were George Abbott and Ann; her maternal grandparents were James Beckwith and Ann Whitfield. She had three brothers named Anthony, Edward William and George.  She was the second oldest of the four children.
