Edward William was born in 1879 in Crook, , Durham, England.  Edward William's father was William Abbott and his mother was Mary Beckwith.  His paternal grandparents were George Abbott and Ann; his maternal grandparents were James Beckwith and Ann Whitfield. He had two brothers and a sister, named Anthony, George and Elizabeth Ann.  He was the third oldest of the four children.
