Anthony was born in 1869 in Crook, , Durham, England.  Anthony's father was William Abbott and his mother was Mary Beckwith.  His paternal grandparents were George Abbott and Ann; his maternal grandparents were James Beckwith and Ann Whitfield. He had two brothers and a sister, named George, Edward William and Elizabeth Ann.  He was the oldest of the four children.
