Norman was born in 1916 in Tennessee, USA.1 Norman's father was John Mckinney Houston and his mother was Vera Roberta Sweat Leatherwood. His paternal grandparents were James Mckinney Houston and Martha Davis; his maternal grandfather is Sweat and his maternal grandmother was Caldonise Callie Massengale. He had three brothers and five sisters, named John Leverne "Vernon", Herman, Alton Leo, Euphie Mae, Minnie, Ester, Ruby and Vallie. He is the fifth oldest of the nine children.-
