Sarah Ann was born on July 11th, 1846 in Tippah, Mississippi, USA. Sarah Ann's father was Brightwell Rather Elder and her mother was Lucinda Elviney Gammel. Her maternal grandparents were Stephen Pate Gammel and Mary Ann Runnels. She had six brothers and three sisters, named John, William L B, Columbus McNeer, William Harrison Hendricks, James Buchanan, Robert Dixie, Mary Ann, Rosa Alva and Lula Ann. She is the second oldest of the ten children.-
