William was born in 1846 in Darley, Menwith, Hampsthwaite, Yorkshire, England.  William's father was William Petty and his mother was Jane (Pettyt).  His paternal grandparents were John Petty and Mary.  He had three brothers and six sisters, named Thomas, Joseph, Benjamin, Jane, Mary, Ann, Sarah, Hannah and Maria.  He was the sixth oldest of the ten children.
