James was born in 1854 in Aughton, Lancashire, England.1   James' father was John Newhouse and his mother was Betsey (Newhouse).  His paternal grandparents were Edward Newhouse and Ellen (Newhouse).  He had six brothers and five sisters, named Edward, Henry, Richard, Thomas, William, John, Eleanor, Mary, Jane, Grace and Ann.  He was the eighth oldest of the twelve children.
