Mary J was born in 1886 in Keighley, Yorkshire, England.¹ Mary J's father was James Argent and her mother was Eliza E Smith. Her paternal grandparents were George Argent and Emily Mann. She had three brothers and seven sisters, named John, Walter, Willie, Sarah, Aletha, Laura, Emma, Elizabeth, Kate and Nellie. She was the nineth oldest of the eleven children.
