John August was born on February 17th, 1704.  John August's father was Duke Frederick The 2. of House Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg and his mother was Princess Magdalena Augusta of House Ascania.  His paternal grandparents were Duke Frederick The 1. of House Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg and Duchess Magdalena Sibylle of House Saxe-Weissenfels. He had a brother and a sister, named Frederick The 3. and Augusta.  He was the second oldest of the three children.  He died at the age of 63 on May 8th, 1767.
