Mary was born about 1847 in Hillington, Norfolk, England.1   Mary's father was Fraser Erskine Lyon and her mother was Anne Guthrie.  Her paternal grandparents are George Lyon and Elizabeth Anderson. She had four brothers and two sisters, named George, Fraser, John, Isaac, Jane and Elizabeth.  She was the fourth oldest of the seven children.
