Jacob's father was Gottlieb Waelz and his mother was Anna Justina Sprecher (Waelz). His paternal grandparents were Martin Welz and Christina Dekowsky (Welz, Heiss); his maternal grandparents were Gottfried Sprecher and Anna Katharina Sokolosky (Sprecher). He had three brothers and two sisters, named Johann, Gottlieb, Jakob, Christina and Louisa. He was the fifth oldest of the six children.
