William was born on February 13th, 1842 in Stromness, Orkney.  William's father was John Wright and his mother was Margaret Goudie.  His maternal grandparents are Baikie Goudie and Catherine Isbister.  He had three brothers and three sisters, named John, Andrew, James, Margaret, Betsy and Catharine.  He was the youngest of the seven children.
