Elizabeth, known as Betsy, was born on March 5th, 1829 in Stromness, Orkney.  Betsy's father was John Wright and her mother was Margaret Goudie.  Her maternal grandparents are Baikie Goudie and Catherine Isbister.  She had four brothers and two sisters, named John, Andrew, James, William, Margaret and Catharine.  She was the second oldest of the seven children.
