Catharine was born on December 13th, 1830 in Stromness, Orkney.  Catharine's father was John Wright and her mother was Margaret Goudie.  Her maternal grandparents are Baikie Goudie and Catherine Isbister.  She had four brothers and two sisters, named John, Andrew, James, William, Margaret and Betsy.  She was the third oldest of the seven children.
