Mary was born about 1836 in Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire.  Mary's father was William Shand and her mother was Mary Watson.  Her maternal grandparents are William Watson and <Unknown>.  She had two brothers and four sisters, named Thomas, Eliska?, Barbara, Margaret, Elisha and Williamina.  She was the third oldest of the seven children.
