Elisha was born in 1851 in Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire.  Elisha's father was William Shand and her mother was Mary Watson.  Her maternal grandparents are William Watson and <Unknown>.  She had two brothers and four sisters, named Thomas, Eliska?, Barbara, Mary, Margaret and Williamina.  She was the sixth oldest of the seven children.
