William was born on December 29th, 1833 in Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire.  William's father was John Linkleter and his mother was Elizabeth Murray.  His paternal grandparents were Andrew Linklater and Elizabeth Arthurson; his maternal grandparents were Alexander Murray and <Unknown>. He had four brothers and four sisters, named James, Alexander, Andrew, George, Margaret, Eliza, Mary and Jane.  He was the youngest of the nine children.
