Eliza was born on February 9th, 1818 in Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire.  Eliza's father was John Linkleter and her mother was Elizabeth Murray.  Her paternal grandparents were Andrew Linklater and Elizabeth Arthurson; her maternal grandparents were Alexander Murray and <Unknown>. She had five brothers and three sisters, named James, Alexander, Andrew, George, William, Margaret, Mary and Jane.  She was the second oldest of the nine children.
