George was born on February 4th, 1829 in Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire.  George's father was John Linkleter and his mother was Elizabeth Murray.  His paternal grandparents were Andrew Linklater and Elizabeth Arthurson; his maternal grandparents were Alexander Murray and <Unknown>. He had four brothers and four sisters, named James, Alexander, Andrew, William, Margaret, Eliza, Mary and Jane.  He was the seventh oldest of the nine children.
