William was born on July 19th, 1834 in Fraserburgh, Aberdeenshire.  William's father was Andrew Fraser and his mother was Martha Cooper.  His paternal grandparents are James Fraser and Jean Lorimer; his maternal grandparents are William Cooper and Martha Fraser.  He had three brothers and five sisters, named James, Andrew, Charles, Martha, Anne, Margaret, Leslie and Elizabeth.  He was the fourth oldest of the nine children.
